How to check the data left on a travel eSIM, and what happens when it runs out
What is left is in My cards: the remaining data and days of each plan, checked with the local network when you open the card. Running out costs nothing extra: the plan simply stops until you add another, unless you turned on auto-renew.
Where to see what is left
- My cards → the card: remaining data against the plan’s total, and the days left. A plan with under 20% left has its renew button on its own row; plans used up or ended are folded under their own line.
- When a card has under 20% left, has run out or has ended, the site tells you the next time you open it.
- Just used a lot? The figure comes from the local network, so it can catch up a little later than your phone.
The phone’s own counter
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular. The list shows each app’s data for the current period; with two lines it counts the line chosen for cellular data.
- At the bottom, Reset Statistics sets it to zero. Do it the day you land and the figure is this trip’s.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → the travel eSIM → App data usage (names differ by maker).
The phone counts for itself, so its figure is an estimate; Apple says the most accurate usage is your carrier’s, which for a travel eSIM is the figure in My cards.
When it runs out
- Every plan we sell is a fixed amount of data for a fixed number of days, none unlimited or slowed after a cap. When the data or the days run out, the eSIM gets no data.
- Nothing is charged for going over and nothing renews by itself.
- Auto-renew, only if you turned it on: at about 5% left (at least 150MB) or 24 hours before the plan ends, it buys the plan again with your points and emails you either way.
- Data left when the days end does not carry over.
Getting more data
- Open the card in My cards and add a plan or renew. The same eSIM takes it: no new QR code, no reinstall.
- Until it is through, use Wi-Fi at the hotel or a café to pay and check in.
- Next trip, work out how much you need first.
Can your home carrier charge you?
The travel eSIM cannot: it is paid in advance. Your home SIM can, in two cases, at its roaming rates:
- Cellular data is set to your home number and its data roaming is on. Set cellular data to the travel eSIM and leave data roaming off on the home line.
- Calls and texts sent from your home number abroad. Receiving texts is usually free; check with your carrier.
Questions
How do I check how much data my travel eSIM has left?
Open the card in My cards: each plan shows its remaining data against the total, and the days left. The phone’s own counter is an estimate.
Will I be charged if my eSIM data runs out?
No. Every plan is a fixed amount of data; at zero it stops working until you add a plan. Only if you turned on auto-renew does it buy the plan again, with points, and email you.
Does unused data carry over?
No: data left when the plan’s days end expires with it. Choose a longer plan if you need more time.
The remaining data has not changed. Why?
The figure comes from the local network and can lag a little behind your phone. Open the card again later.
How do I top up a travel eSIM?
Open the card in My cards and add a plan or renew: that is the top-up. Same eSIM, no new QR code, no reinstall.
